Meet a fabulous lady... Melisser Elliott

Melisser is not only a cruelty free cosmetics blogger (that's a long definition). What's more, she's not only a very generous and fantastic lady (she's replied to my queries so quickly and lovingly). What Melisser really is is a vegan make-up genius that has managed to construct a reliable, ridiculously precise list of what we vegan ladies (and men) can wear on our faces. And I mean, reliable to the point of being more exact than what most companies PRs will send you.

For instance, did you know that M.A.C.'s matte lipsticks are vegan? I definitely didn't. So squeacking of joy, I bought two colors. Then I saw "Carmine" written on their box, I though, oh, dear, missinformation. So I told her I had actually read the box and that sadly they weren't. You know what she did? She informed me that M.A.C. uses a generic box for their products (a bit like when you buy chocolates, the box will have writen down the ingredients for all of them at once, and you'll never kow if the dark chocolate ones are vegan or not). And! She fowarded me a reply to a letter she sent M.A.C. about it with the lab analysis of what's vegan. I mean, she is a super star. Thanks a lot, Melisser!

TWO! *THIS GIVAWAY IS NOW CLOSED*

THIS GIVAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

My dear darling everyone,

September is here and that means that by now this blog is over TWO years old. It feels like a lifetime!
Thanks to everyon who is reading this: the faithful, the stumblers, and the irregulars. I am extremely blessed to ahve you all here.
In order to express my gratitude properly (you know what's coming...) I'm going to organize a giveaway. I am calling it giveaway but it's actually a MASSIVEGIVEAWAY. Or rather, TWO (get the relation there?).

PRICE A:
A hair portrait. Wait. Your hair portrait. This means I'll draw your hairdo, you hair, your neck. With very much love. This will be now offered and it's worth 75 dollars.

PRICE B:
A face portrait made with pencils. And yes, that'd be YOUR face (or whoever's you chose). This is also offered in the shop and it's worth 125 dollars.

All you have to do is comment in this post BEFORE THE 15th of SEPTEMBER and saying why would you like your portrait made (either of them). The two winners will be chosen at random :)

Best of luck!

The vegan dog

"The first thing I did when I moved to England was calling the animal shelter. Really. As soon as I got a place, an English place, a place with a garden, even if I only had the lower floor, I still had the garden. So, as soon as i had a garden I went to the shelter and realized my life-long dream: giving a dog a home. I cannot even start describing how long I’ve wanted, needed, a dog for."

New short story here. Might not be what you think... Tell me how you liked it!

Playing writer

You might have noticed I do not tend to write much here. You might also know I do have a text and theory section in my site for non-fiction writings. Well, now I am letting you know I am going to give creative writing a try. When I draw a hair portrait, I always write a little something for it. And long, long time ago I used to write more than draw. So here it is, Knowing she would.

This is a bit of my first story, Rice Milk.

"I woke up at night because I heard rattling noises in the kitchen. As soon as I heard them, I realized how pointlessly scared I had been the other times some random noise had woken me up. This wasn’t a poster falling off the wall, or the neighbour’s dog going for a midnight snack. There was someone in the kitchen and that was it..."

Read the rest here.
And please let me know what you think :)

Thanks Einat!

Einat, from Israel has a lovely blog called DesignBreak and has included my Hair portraits in it. Thanks and keep up the hard work!

Procrastination, cool doggy style

Whoever started this blog, has no respect for my to-do list.

Elle Decor! Super mega yay! (or bad self-promotion gone good)

Yeah, that's the Lucky Candles in the Elle Decor Blog from South Africa!

Nonetheless, I feel like there's a lesson to be learnt here, so I'll tell you the full story of how this happened.

When I was studying in CSM they were very good at telling us about self-promotion. Basically, the message was "they won't come looking for you (there are thousands of designers being vomited from design schools every year), you need to go and present yourself". That's really true, boys and girls. So I try and make a habit of contacting bloggers I honestly admire and show them my work (you can see some advice on approaching blog editors, from the horses' mouth).

This, as far as I have seen, causes two reactions: polite silence or enthusastic blogging. Now, when I approached Heather Moore (aka Skinny LaMinx) about my work, I did something very stupid: I sent all the blah, blah, blah and forgot the pictures, so I had to go back and send a "i'mreallystupidbutherearethepictures" mail. That's BAD on anyone's book.

Heather was terrifically sweet about it, joking about how I was trying to get her attention by bombarding her email account, and still posted the candles on the Elle Decor blog.

So what have we learnt? If you want to get your work seen, promote yourself. If you want to promote yourself, double check if you send your pictures. If you f*ck up, pray it's Heather who you were emailing. Thanks, Heather, for everything.

New look!

Well, it's taken a while, and some of you might have catched the messy in-betweens and working stages, but this is the new look, for the moment. My only doubts are about the banner, but that's a quick fix :)

How do you like it?

Design for Mankind, no less.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Thank you, Erin!

Busy, busy, busy!

I had to study a chair (Graphical Analysis and Geometrical Reproduction), I had to design, write and make a small book on design (Design I), and now I have to create a free-themed sculpture (Sculpture I). So what did I choose to do? Something easy? No! I have decided to cross-stitch a whole Barbie doll (it's meant to be a comment on what being a female is like, I was thinking of calling it " Man, I feel like a woman!", but we'll see). Bear with me, it's due on Tuesday (legs and arms to go, head about to be finished).

PS: Thanks to the fabulous "The Science of Design" for posting my work!

Laura Splan

Posted via email from A to Z of Makers . posterous

Er, something is not quite right :)

Time to stop fiddling with posterous or start learning how this whole thing works :)

The dilema

I've been struggling to get a portfolio platform for my work and in my search I stumbled into tumbler (and posterous, the even more flexible system, which can adopt tumblr themes).

Whilst it did not have the perfect features, it was VERY close to doing so.
And I might not use it for my porfolio, but I'm seriously tempted to use it, somehow. I like the thousands of designs and how neat they all are.
I've toyed with the idea of moving the A to Z from blogspot to here (or equivalent in tumblr) , but I'm not sure (I'm missing the little profile notes for some reason).
Do you use it? Do you like it?

Merry Christmas!

Well, well, well, it's Christmas again and I kind of just got into the whole festive thing. I've been a terrible blogger this month, and I plan on being even worse over the holidays. Why? I need to design, write and make a 24 page book on Design for school (must include a CD with all notes taken in class amongst other stipulations, like using 3 languages. It's all rather random).I'm still wondering why.

Have a super fabulous Christmas and I'll hopefully see you around here soon :)

PS: Some fun sites for quieter festive times:

Aesthetics Voodoo

This has been my latest (conceptual) sculpture project (I do three weekly hours of figure modelling in clay too).
I ritually collected my hair after brushing for weeks. Then I made a voodoo doll out of them. And I inflicted on myself cut outs of fashion magazines, pinning them with needles (as you do).
It is presented in a display case with a label, like if it was in an anthropological museum of the future. The label describes that women in the 20th and 21st century were known for bizarre ritual behaviour surrounding ideal aesthetics, such as starving themselves or implanting synthetic bags in their breasts to enhance them.

PS: You might have noticed I have been entering more "me" posts lately. That's because I also blog at The A to Z of makers, where I write mini-profiles of artists I'd like to remember.

Keri Smith

I've had her books in my hands without even realizing.

Now I've found out some of the writtings in her blog and I'm fascinated.

See what I mean here.

PS: Is it me, or one cannot see most of the images in this blog anymore?!

A to Z of Makers

Since I was not busy enough (ha, ha, ha) I've started a new blog:

"A to Z of makers"

Each post will be like an index card for an artist, designer or crafter that I'd like to be able to find again.

Hope you like it too!

This is weird.

I'm a bit weirded out by similar things to my It Bags popping all over the place. I seem to have seen a Fendi one, a Longchamp one and well, other bloggers showing their on versions of my work (crediting me and all, although they did get comments in their post asking to buy it off them). Is this weird or what?
If you sell original wearable illustrations for 25 dollars in a teeny tiny online store, isn't it nice to support this person's work?
Mmmm. I'm not sure I'm angry, and I should be really flattered (I'm not saying the Big Names copied my work, rather that we all came to the same creative conclusion). I'm still feeling ackward, though, about the "I copied this off the web, isn't it nice" kind of thing.
Any thoughts?

Mati Rose

Remember I sold my first PaperBling yesterday?

Well, it is most likely it happened because of Mati Rose, who posted my work on her blog.

Now, that's awesome by itself, but it so happens that Mati Rose is a bold, energetic, crazy, colorful, fantastic, fabulous artist.

Check it out by yourselves!

Liza Lou

I saw Liza Lou's work on Elle Decor SA and I was in so much shock and awe I've taken a few days to post this.

Just so that you know, it's ALL made with beads.
