House on Fire

Now, now, now, I've been blah-in about "when I lived in Swaziland" this and that but I'm extremely proud to say that the best club ever (and gallery) has a brand new website!

I just couldn't describe the lively, magic sculptures you can find there, but finally! They are online :)
This is House on Fire.

Zhili's Birds

So subtle. So poetical.

This to me shows a perfect balance between design craft and art. Stunning.

Mimicus

Vincon (Barcelona's best design shop) is selling this ceiling lamp that transforms into 8 different shapes. By Noé Marcial Camperi.

Vini, vidi, vinci

Or however you spell that. i think this is what Debeauxsouvenirs has done in Etsy. She's had the shop for a bout two weeks, and already been front page. And already sold. I'm jelous but happy for her too, because i truly fancy some of her stuff. It's so basic but delicate!

Embroiderer's lamp

I've found this adapted lamp in the latest Elle Decor (UK edition). It belongs to Australian fashion designer Martin Grant, who lives in an absolutely gorgeous (but not too ostentatious) apartment in Paris. Back to the lamp, the original idea is that the water magnifies, and the light source above (a candle in its original 19th century state), illuminates. I found this lamp very ingenious and aesthetically pleasing. Oh, and the whole flat was a-ma-zing.

Bernard Stern?

This last Saturday's Guardian Macazine had a special on 50s interior design (i.e. two pages). And they randomly displayed these lights by Bernard Stern. I say randomly because they weren't mentioned anywhere else in the text or in the shopping guide. But I really liked them. I googled them, and I've had no luck whatsoever; so I'm starting to doubt whether they are by this Beranard Stern at all. They remind me a bit of the Beat lights by Tom Dixon (image below), but in warmer tones, shapes and materials. Which ones do you prefer?

Fake Reflections

Have you ever had that "oh, I wish i had come up with that!" moment? It's bittersweet: you admire the simple grandess of someone else, at the same time you acknowledge your lack of it. Here are two pieces that remind me of each other (Front's was first), and both provoked me that pinch in my stomach:

Daniel Rybakken's Daylight emitting table:

Daniel is a recent MA graduate from Fine Art and Desing at HDK (Gothenberg). This absolute genius table projects the fake reflection of a window on the floor, giving the impression of a brighter day and of more windows. He claims it might help counter Seasonal Affective Disorder. Find out more about his work here.

Front's Reflection cupboard:

Front is an all-women design studio that has managed to put rather conceptual design on the mainstream eye. Whilst some pieces might be a bit of a shocker (remember the horse lamp for MOOOI, anyone?), other are just magnific. And this one is eerie and fascinating: the reflection shown on the doors of the cupboard is an illusion. It's not a lack of expertise of the photographer: it's the buzzing imagination of the designers. All cupboards come with this reflection. More on Front here.
