Emily and Simon

My biggest throretical piece during my Baccalaureate was a comparison between the images of teenagers of two artists: an adult that painted teens and a teen that drew comics. The painter was Simon Henwood and he was super nice to the 17 year old me.
The other day I found out about Emily Glaubinger and her work reminded me of Hemwood's a bit more on the postpostmodern side.
So I leave you in the good company of their creations...

(Simon's-Emily's-Simon's-Emily's)

Kehinde Wiley

You know I'm a sucker for patterns.
You know I like the world bold and colorful.
Then imagine my reaction in discovering Kehinde Wiley's art.
I know, I felt I died and went to heaven too.

Neon nature

By Ginette Lapalme, found at her flickr.

Domenico Gnoli

An Italian painter that painted hair...
I found this artist browsing through old catalogues in a book fair that's now up in Madrid.
Reminds me of Botero a bit, but with a mad attention to detail.
Good info in Spanish here.

Anna Von Mertens

This textile and conceptual (and plastic) work portrays the auras of well known figures , via The best part. Especially interesting the process of belief that if involved. See more here.

Maruja Mallo

Maruja Mallo is one of the most important painteds of the Spanish avant-garde, but no one seems to know much about her work. Actually, when her biography pops up here or there, the writers seem to prioritize the fact that she knew intelectual celebrities that were her contemporaries, like Dali or Lorca, rather than her quite unique insight as a woman artist to the time she was living. Actually, her wiki page doesn't even show any of her paintings. She was a Republican, and had to be exiled, whilst her art was exhibited all over the world. By the time she was able to come back to Spain, she was mostly unknown there, and remains to be so.

Nosideup shop: new, new, new!

Dear everyone, as promised Nosideup is back up, and so much has been happening in there!
You can now find a lot of rather abstract paintings I made in Barcelona. Most of these are made with liquid watercolors, a marvelous condensed pigment that leaves a velety finish and, lots of the time, unexpected hues and textures.
These paintings are mostly explorations of colors and finishes, and have amazingly subtle pigmentation and feeling.
In the next few days I plan to add Paperbling to Nosideup and have it all uner one (virtual) roof.
I hope you enjoy the changes, and please let me know what you think!

kid to reality

An artist's project consisting of turning children's drawings into "realistic" images...
Reminds me of this project.

Jennifer Aniston at the MoPA

Jennifer Aniston admiring the prize winning portrait of her at the first MoPA award winners' exhibition.

Thanks, Edu.

The Good, the Good and the Ugly: the good - Cori Mercade

So, good post number two: Cori Mercade.

Guess what, yes, I met her too.
Cori is an artist that paints conceptually. Now, that is not easy because as she says, "I cannot be labelled in galleries". I find that massively stupid of the gallerists because her work is gorgerous and sometimes dark, sometimes calming, but always passionate.
She explains that her labor as an artist is very much about education as well, and she set up an amazing conceptual art school for children with a friend in a coast village close to Barcelona. The work they do is about the process, not the results and there's no right or wrong. Parents quickly adapt. They teach adults, as well, and they even have a summer camp where children make movies. Isn't that just fantastic?

The bad conscience

It's been 10 days since my last post and my bad conscience is killing me. I don't even know how this has happened. I guess that I've had so many things going on that I haven't even known how to get back on blog track. So, here's the last few days:

-Basically, Mr. M. and I have learnt it's moving time again (most probably). This makes us happy for all the new possibilities, but we feel that Barcelona has been really awesome to us, and feel like our time here has been so short.
-This has also leads to having to act upon the future of my education. We'll see how that goes.
-I've also learnt to paint with liquid watercolours rather than acrylics and I'm in a very blissful Rothko fase. Pictures to come.
-My vegan heart does not take the zoo drawing lessons that well anymore. But I've developed a new personal style.
-Spring isn't quite happening yet.
-I've cut my hair so short I still don't recognize myself in the mirror.
-Fantastic Mr Fox only opened in cinemas now and we loved it.
-Alice in Wonderland did not meet expectatives.

I'm hopefully back now!

Ghostly art

Somehow, very intimate.

Sculptures by Jin Young Yu. Via Arrested motion.
Painting by Anne Siems. Via Aha!

Austin Power

Is that his real name? we'll possibly never know.

Nonetheless, his watercolour portraits are so very ghostly and, in a way, tender that I just had to show you. Enjoy.

The Offer

Another strange painting.

(First watercolour attempt, and I liked them very much, actually)
I promise this is a happy painting despite all the gore!
Teacher feedback: boring, too symetrical.
Failing harder, all the way :)

A lengthy process - Joe Sorren

As a Painting student I found this post on how a picture is made absolutely fascinating. From May to August! See the full article here.
Via Art-Milk.

Balthus and Hamilton

...That very fine line between inspired and perverted (or how OK is it to view teenagers as sexual beings).

And an obvious connexion between the two.

Hamilton discovered via Mnemosyne.

Beehive yourself!

New painting. The theacher's feedback was "try drawing the outline of the figure better, not more realistic, just better". Go figure.

I cant' paint... 2

This is one of my new attempts to experiment with the physicality of paint. I've been scratching it (sgraffito is the technical name when you do it properly, but I only learned that later). I've also been working on a transparent base so that you can see what's behind (or even turn the pic around to see the "inside" layers of paint).

We'll see where all this leads to!
