The wheel of knowledge

... made my heart skip a beat. Even if my art books wouldn't fit.

If you placed them by color and made it speen very fast, would you see white?

Want it...

Handmade 3D

Lúa Coderch

Lúa and I met at "Una Escola Tropical" (A tropical school), a weekend course in Terrassa.

I just found her full portfolio, and I find her work very stimulating and poetical.
She pushes her ideas to their consequential edge.

Here are a few examples of her series "Paroxism of Reading":

"Classifying Joyce"
(picking every single word out of Ulysses and classifying them alphabetically)

(image above, "Erasing Proust": erasing a page out of "La Rechérche" until the minimum "aroma" of the text is left).

Miranda July

She does rock my socks, badly.
Just the initial page of her site would do it.
But she's got a gorgeous movie out there, and a fab collection of stories. There's more, too, but I'm getting into her universe slowly, slowly.
If you ever thought that all performance artists rip their guts off in public whilst talking about their vaginas, try again. Her sweetness, and innocence and candour doesn't make her shallow, quite the contrary. It's like when you realize there are great writers that do not need big words to write beautifully.

Epileptic

Absolutely beautiful, absolutely dark, absolutely honest graphic novel by David B. Absolutely recommended.

Keri Smith

I've had her books in my hands without even realizing.

Now I've found out some of the writtings in her blog and I'm fascinated.

See what I mean here.

PS: Is it me, or one cannot see most of the images in this blog anymore?!

Am I alright?

I am actually enjoying this. I must confess I have actually pretty much read the whole book in a day. Oops. Is this OK?

Paper

Awesome book on art made with paper.

The Shop house

So pretty!

Such a lovely book! See it here.

Perfumes: the Guide

If you have ever, ever walked into a department store and sprayed yourselves senseless; if you have been left associating that book you bought with the smelly tester paper you used to mark the page, if you have ever been given a perfume for Christmas... Read this. It's witty and rather fascinating (and it is grossly entertaining to share. What did you say you use? Oh, they only give a star to that -a tonic for your inner bitch-).
It basically reviews most perfumes ever made (even obscure brands) with stars (one for poor, five for brilliant).

And well, I just have to say it. After reading this, it's official I have a pretty good nose (something had to compensate my lack or rythm and coordination).

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

So good, it hurts. Read in one sitting. Soooo good.

Freud on paper

I am fascinated by people's sketches and drawings. They might have been considered minor pieces compared against finished paintings, but these are great. I keep on looking at the dates and calculating: how old was he here? Is there still any hope for myself?

Walton Ford

The animal protraits by Walton Ford totally fascinate me. They are cruel and beautiful and, in a way, old. As much as I like it, the £1000 book on him is still a bit steep. Oh well, there'll always be Google images.

Monkey portraits

There's this absolutely grand bookstore here in Oxford that specializes in Art and Design. Now, this is terribly dangerous, so i try to go there as little as possible. But a couple of days ago, the taxman has been really, really nice and returned a little money to me. You see where I'm going, don't you? Books are one of the only things I cannot resist, as you already know. I have to say I was very, very good; I only got the Taschen hardback edition of Women artists (really good, by the way), and this little gem. The book was found on a shelf by Mr M., and it just struck some weird cord within us immediately.

Jill Greenberg is the artist that, some years ago, was considered controversial and evil for taking portraits of crying babies (remember?). These portraits are kind of mind blowing. The animals are so obviously intelligent, feeling beings, aware of their own existence, even reflective. And they are sometimes physically puzzling, like if nature copied cartoon characters. And then there's Jill's lighting effects that make it all so "plastic". Wonderful.

My penguin

They publish the book, and you design your own cover. Isn't it a whole new world of possibilities? I bet they make a loving gift! See more here (they're available at amazon too, just look "my penguin" up).

Strangeland by Tracey Emin

Read in an afternoon, it's left me shaky...

10000 hours

According to Malcolm Gladwell, a genius reaches its tipping point after 10000 hrs of hard, hard work. Obviously, you need to be goodand dedicated and what's more, lucky. But you also need these 10000 hrs. I'll call you when I reach mine (after much luck and dedication).

See more here.

J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere

Before I get into the work of this fantastic photographer, let me excuse myself for the irregularity lately: it has been a hectic week, and a rather cold one, and the going to the internet building late at night has found many problems. Please bear with me, because it is getting colder, and I am getting busier. Again, mid-December seems to be the time when I'll be able to have a daily sleepy post from bed.

But now, to J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere. I got African Art Now from the local library a week ago, and suddenly, there it was, in front of me: an artist obsessed with women's hairdos. I know, what are the chances, and, the world is tiny. I was very impressed, but had no hope to find much more about him unless I researched myself. But guess what, today I crossed an "all books £2" bookshop. I got in (cheap books, you know me) and this book on his work was on the shelf. I couldn't believe my luck. So, ladies and gentlemen (is any gentleman reading this, by the way?), let me introduce J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere. Expect a heavy influence on my drawings!
