Interview in Go Mag!

Lovely Anna Tomás from Go Mag has published an interview with me today!
It is in Spanish so let google translate or your old second grade Spanish class help you out wit this one :)

The Alhondiga

The Alhondiga in Bilbao is a beautiful space designed by P. Starck (of course). I'm not his biggest fan but I liked this design. The different columns and the swimming pool on the ceiling (you can see the pople swimming above you) were lovely.

Maruja Mallo

Maruja Mallo is one of the most important painteds of the Spanish avant-garde, but no one seems to know much about her work. Actually, when her biography pops up here or there, the writers seem to prioritize the fact that she knew intelectual celebrities that were her contemporaries, like Dali or Lorca, rather than her quite unique insight as a woman artist to the time she was living. Actually, her wiki page doesn't even show any of her paintings. She was a Republican, and had to be exiled, whilst her art was exhibited all over the world. By the time she was able to come back to Spain, she was mostly unknown there, and remains to be so.

PROUD

I am PROUD, PROUD in capital letters, PROUD that we said PROU -enough, in Catalan- (Ok this was easy).
No more bullfighting in Catalonia, by law.
No more unnecessary death.
No more cruel tradtition.
No more hiding behind "Art".
Thanks to everybody who has made this possible.
And let's take it to the rest of the country.

(*I happen to have internet in Astudillo this time!)

To be continued

Oh well, oh well.
I was just getting the taste of blogging again after the internet move, and now the summer family-visiting responsibilites will make it hard again!
Mr. M and me are going to see his family in his village (I told you about it here).
Be good.

I leave you with the extraordinary work of Debra Baxter, who I already posted in the A to Z of makers, but her work is so fascinating that I'd like to show you guys too. The materiality, the subtlety and the humour of her pieces are unique.

PS: If you love it, she's got a jewellery shop!

everything is happening so fast

Mr M and I are in Madrid. We've now found a tiny lovely flat in the center and we are arranging the move.

I'll be a bit invisible for the coming week...
See you soon...

Inhabitant

Work by Emily Speed. Via ///.

I feel exactly like that, vulnerable and safe at the same time.

I am officially announcing that Mr. M. and I are moving to Madrid. This is the 4th city in 4 years (London-Oxford-Barcelona-Madrid). Barcelona has been absolutely fantastic, but Mr. M. has been offered a dream job (yay!), for which we are really happy. Nonetheless, I am now trying to finish my course, find a flat, pack this one and apply for more courses in Madrid. So yes, happy but still unsure. I never thought we could be such nomads.

PS: Spanish flats for rent tend to include furniture. And I mean "grandma-just-died", ugly, barroque, dark furniture. Not only that, but if you see a 40m square flat it's probably cluttered with two sofas, two armchairs, several wall shelves, TV furniture, coffe tables, dinning table with 6 chairs, two beds instead of a double one, golden lamps, etc. I'm heroically cruising through the see of bad (or lack of) interior design. Wish me luck!

I'm back!

Dear everyone,
I'm now officially back (at least online, I'm not in Barcelona yet).
And you know what? It's actually been lovely.
I had this photography assignment for school where I needed to take pics of ghosts (yes, really) and well, Mr. M.'s family has a 120yr old house (sadly very run down) that has been perfect for it.
I need to thank Mr. M. and his dad for their enthusiastic help, they were the best ghosts a student could hope for.
I leave you with a few pics from the session, I still need to catch up with the world :)

Astudillo

I'm off for Easter to Mr. M.'s village, Astudillo.

Just for you to know there'll be no internet there.
There is electricity, as you can see from the space-age ad they have up on their streets.

ARCO, the aftermath

Arco is meant to be the referential show for all those new things in Art. I had never been able to go until now, and well, NOW is crisis time.

So, what did I see? Loads of 2D, loads of safe bets, loads of repetition, ans some "I bet this makes it into the papers". Not very impressed.
Here's a tiny collection of what I saw (you might ask who are the pieces by. This is a good thing to ask. But the place was so, so overwhelming, all I can say is, sorry, I have no clue).

ARCO

I'm off to ARCO (COntemorary ARt fair) in Madrid.

Be good...
I leave you with the goollery, a website that compiles all google-inspired projects. You'll be so busy procrastinating there, you won't even miss me :)

think local

I am always an ungrateful brat and spend my summer holidays complaining about my hometown. I would use "dull" to describe it softly. But every early August the whole place lightens up and becomes full of people, buzzing. This is called Firagost and well, every year is similar but it never fails to get us all out in the street.

Since I have been far away I've developed a craft-culture or a material-culture awareness and love to see what my region has to offer.

Here are some pics of my naughty buys (I am still looking for a flat, but filling it up already!) and the streets.

Vanitas by Fernando Vicente

Not the first seen in this style, but full of charm and massive amounts of talent. Really subtle and animalistic reminder of what lies beneath glamour. Fernando Vicente is also an illustrator for El Pais. You can see more here.
