Jose Joaquin Figueroa (and more)

Saw Figueroa's work in an exhibition on Euro-American photographers. You can find his work here. I remember seeing African necklaces made with coca-cola lids and barbie heads in a museum in Jo'burg. We were learning about material culture, about appropiation, adaptation, reflexing, surviving, recycling. Ringed many bells, then.

Reminds me of many other body and branding projects such as this by Anna Halldin-Maule:

or this other one by LaChapelle:

or this very controverisal one (the pigs were alledgedly sedated and tattooed and then lived pampered until their natural lives when their skins were used) by Wim Delvoye:

ARCO, the aftermath

Arco is meant to be the referential show for all those new things in Art. I had never been able to go until now, and well, NOW is crisis time.

So, what did I see? Loads of 2D, loads of safe bets, loads of repetition, ans some "I bet this makes it into the papers". Not very impressed.
Here's a tiny collection of what I saw (you might ask who are the pieces by. This is a good thing to ask. But the place was so, so overwhelming, all I can say is, sorry, I have no clue).

5.5 designers

5.5 designers are a French bunch of true people who design. I can imagine they literally sit down together to sketch, invent and have fun. They actually sold their designs for a symbolic euro this october as a statement. I know, I'm biased, but seriously, they're authentic. This is how I feel design should be. I've been a fan for a while and I've got the purrrfect excuse to tell you about them.

They've just launched this set of sponges (produced by Scotch Brite). Isn't it ingenious how the sponge is a house off which little sponge-symbols can be taken? You can have your shower sponge, and your table ware sponge, and your loo sponge... ahhh...
Buy them here.

(If you want to see some more by them, please do have a look further down.)

The Story of Stuff

I know I keep on going on about shops and design, and that I'm trained as an industrial designer, but I still feel the need to pass this video on. It's a bit of a New Year resolution, keeping my head clear of what is needed and what's not. Although I'm sure that as a vegan on a small salary in a provisional flat I'm not the biggest consuming monster out there. Anyways, information is power.

You can have more power here.
